The Secret Life of Newby Hall Gardens

Taking inspiration from this magnificent North Yorkshire Garden, I created a series of iconic garden views at Newby Hall, Ripon Yorkshire.

Visit the NewBy Hall collection.

I was invited to paint here by Lucinda Compton, co-owner of Newby Hall, after she saw me painting the main border and House outside at The Autumn Harrogate Flower Show with a gathering of interested people round her.

I was at Newby Hall as Artist-in-Residence for the ‘Human Gardeners’ where the founders Sarah Owen-Hughes, Head Gardener at Rudding Park and Faith Douglas curator at Thorpe Perrow, interview people onstage about ‘all things Nature and the people in the plant world’, at each of the twice-yearly Flower Shows.

Over the Winter months when Newby Hall and Gardens was closed to the public, I created “The Rock Garden” and “Autumn Garden” paintings. These paintings offer garden lovers a secret glimpse of the Garden’s seasonal life.  I paint in my signature style using moss, leaves and fallen twigs, painting nature with nature as I depict the flowers, foliage and trees. I then add landscape structures, birds and insects - such as a Heron or Robin with a brush.

“Each painting tells a story, I painted all these artworks outside on canvas absorbing the atmosphere, colours, seeing and hearing wildlife. Sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy - it all adds to each painting. I love using bright colours stemming from a career in fashion working for brands such as Liberty’s of London as a buyer. The paintings I create are impressionistic.

Lawrence Wright, head Gardener has also guided me around the garden showing hidden locations to paint.  I have loved every minute of this and feel proud of the work I have produced. Catch me painting in the gardens this year.”

I have also added the colourful Water Garden painting and Newby Hall and Wild Narcissi to the collection and is finishing off The Laburnum Walk.

All these paintings come as Limited Edition Prints in canvas or on paper.

My background to painting outside stems from early childhood. No matter what the weather - I'll always try and paint outside of my studio to capture the subject matter be it animals, landscapes or as is often the case - a combination!

Beautiful autumn colouring this year inspired me to capture the cherry trees on the stray in Harrogate - slightly windy conditions made the outdoors challenging but well worth the effort - !

Had a fabulous time at the gardens of Monet in the tranquil village of Giverny. Made all the more exciting when a massive storm hit the village the evening we arrived - ended up eating my Sea Bass in a plate full of rainwater..... as the restaurant got deluged!
