Bettys Limited Edition Giclee Print
Betty’s Limited Edition Giclee Print
There has been the world famous Bettys tea shop and restaurant in Harrogate since 1919. It was set up by Frederick Belmont, a Swiss Confectioner and to this day tourists and locals queue to enjoy the delicious savoury and sweet food offered on Parliament Street overlooking Harrogate’s Stray.
I was looking for a building in Harrogate which would inspire me and perfectly encapsulate some of the essence of Harrogate. The building which Bettys occupies on Parliament Street, Harrogate is stunning. I knew I could create a layered paper cut to do the iconic Bettys justice. So, I commenced researching Bettys. I took numerous photos and sketched the facade including the people sitting in the Windows. At my working art gallery and studio, The Dove Tree Art Studio, I laid down some paper to commence work. I first drew out the building in brown acid free paper. It took a long time to measure out using a pencil and ruler. When paper cutting, I just use my eyesight and rudimentary tools pencil, rubber and ruler. No computers or laser cutters are involved.
Taking a very sharp scalpel, I proceeded to cut Bettys. It took hours to perfectly cut the Windows, door and profile of this building incorporating the clock tower. I included people sitting in the window each with a story attached. There is a little boy and his Grandad both drinking milkshakes and two ladies having a catch up over Bettys coffee. Next I concentrated on the shop, carefully paper cutting out the cakes on display. I decided to gold leaf the cakes as they are indeed the raison d’etre to Bettys existence. I used real gold leaf for this.
I took black card next and with the letters in reverse I carefully cut out the letters on the canopy. This alone took me three hours to do. Finally the layers had to be put together. I chose a duck egg blue colour for the background and added a white clock face.
I feel this paper cut of Bettys has worked perfectly. The richness of the brown and contrasting colours particularly the gold leaf work.
Giclee prints have been created of the original. They are A4 size and are Limited Edition, 195 in the edition. They perfectly suit the current trend for neutrals in interior decoration. This would also make the perfect Christmas or birthday present for those who love Bettys.
