Yorkshire Air Ambulance Christmas Cards 2017
When finding inspiration for illustrations for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance designs I usually first through books, look at retro Christmas cards, visit art exhibitions. Generally however, I find that the ideas just come to me and often, the first sketches I do in my sketch book are the ones I use.
This year, I have created three different Christmas Card designs called:-The Essence of Christmas; Yorkshire Farm and Dales and Helicopter and the White Horse.
‘The essence of Christmas’. Using a tiny, miniature painting brush I painted many different tiny things we all associate with Christmas. These include a Robin, snowman, the nativity scene, a Christmas tree, children sledging, an angel, presents and so on… I love detail and the challenge of painting these images, often about 1 cm in diameter appealed to me.
‘Yorkshire Farm and Dales’ features farmyard animals lovingly looking up at the yellow Yorkshire Air Ambulance flying over their Dales farmhouse. I have again used a tiny brush to capture the fur and character of each animal using mainly watercolour with some gouache paint. I have depicted animals such as sheep, cows and donkeys that were in the stable in a Manger in traditional nativity scenes as well as the traditional farmyard ones such as a cat, sheepdog, horses, geese and chickens. I adore animals and have painted them for decades so I loved portraying each animal in their farm setting. Flitter glitter perfectly enhances the snowy Dales.
Last year I created the ‘Helicopter over Snowy Valley’ which I painted on a large piece of Sanders thick watercolour paper. I used shades of blue and purple acrylic paint to create this painting using twigs to paint the tree. This proved to be probably the best selling Christmas Card design, Yorkshire Ambulance supporters loved my unconventional, but my favourite choice of colours, to portray this Wintry Christmas card. It features lots of children playing in the snow, snowballing, sledging or building a snowman generally having fun.
I have carried on the theme this year for 2017 in The Helicopter and the White Horse using the same colours and same children but this time in a wood at Kilburn, Yorkshire, looking at the vision of that special White Horse with a Yorkshire Air Ambulance hovering over. Spot the boy halfway up a tree, or the pair of rabbits! I loved creating and painting this splashing white gouache on for the snow. The Christmas card is a perfect reproduction of my original and is enhanced with sparkly glitter on the trees and on the White Horse.
These Christmas cards sell for £4 for a pack of 10 cards and envelopes. They are available to buy either from The Dove Tree Art Studio, my art Gallery and working art studio in Harrogate or through the Yorkshire Air Ambulance website www.yorkshireairambulance.org.uk. 100% sales go straight to this wonderful charity.
“As a Harrogate artist and painter, I wanted to use my skills to help this well-loved charity and a charity which one day any one of may need. They need £12,000 a day to keep the two helicopters in the sky.”
